Support Groups for Breast Cancer

There are several types of cancer commonly affecting many people. In women, breast cancer is considered to be the second most common type of cancer, after lung cancer. Nobody is immune. The risk of developing breast cancer is present in the lifetime of every woman on earth.

According to OncoLink (www.oncolink.org), nearly 200,000 women were diagnosed to have breast cancer in 2001. That number is quite high. We should give these statistics a serious consideration by admitting that the risks are great and that we can help promote breast cancer awareness and support medical researches throughout the world.

In view of this, women all over the world are encouraged to perform a self breast examination monthly to detect any abnormality. Breast cancer specialists recommend a screening every year. Individuals who have a family history of cancer, or have had recent health conditions, or meet other risk factor criteria, should also undergo routine tests.

As we grow older, our body undergoes changes which could increase our risk for breast cancer. A biopsy is good as it can identify breast tissue changes which cannot be detected by external inspection alone. It may take years for a minute abnormality to grow to a size which can be detected by touch. Yet, it is a fact that not all tumors take so long to spread. A lot of these can spread very fast. If diagnosis has been made at initial stages, treatment may prove more effective and prognosis may be good.

There are Breast Cancer Support Groups who can help both young and old patients in all stages of the disease. These support groups are established to assist those who have just been diagnosed of having breast cancer, those who have had the disease for quite a while, those who are recovering from it, and those who are in the terminal stage. Breast Cancer Support Groups also aim to bring awareness and prevention education to women who don't have the disease.

Breast cancer awareness should be on top of everybody's mind, men and women alike. Breast cancer not only affects every aspect of the victims' lives, but also those of everyone that matters to them. The first step in the fight against breast cancer is early detection. Breast Cancer Support Groups help to educate and inform both victims and non-victims. These groups act as a way of promoting awareness and prevention to those who don't have breast cancer as well as a support system to those who have it.

Breast Cancer Support Groups further help those who have family members and friends suffering from this disease. Wherever you are, you're most likely to find a Breast Cancer Support group that's best for you within your area. You can get more information at your hospitals, local library, and even through the web.
