How to Protect Yourself from Breast Cancer

Since there are more than two hundred types of cancer today, you're most likely to have known somebody in your life to be affected by it. You need to seriously consider cancer prevention especially if this disease runs in your family, or if you're exposed to other risk factors.

One of the most dreadful diseases is breast cancer. But, there is now a greater hope of surviving from this disease. There are certain measures to take in order to prevent it. With a 1 in 9 chance of getting affected by breast cancer, proper education regarding prevention and early detection of this disease is of paramount importance.

There are several factors that may lead to breast cancer. Some of which we can control and others we cannot. Let us tackle briefly those various factors so you will be able to identify the difference.

The most common risk factors are beyond our control. First, being women alone is a risk factor we cannot avoid. Apart from that, as we grow older our chances of developing breast cancer increases as well. Other risk factors that we have no control over include genetic make-up, family history of breast cancer, race, previous chest x-ray and the like.

Risk factors that happen as a direct result of our lifestyle choices are seemingly more harrowing and depressing. When a diagnosis of breast cancer is made and we know that it's most likely caused by our lifestyle, we tend to feel guilty and rueful over our past practices. These lifestyle choices and practices may include use of oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, unhealthy dietary habits, alcohol consumption, obesity, smoking, drug abuse, and lack of physical exercise.

Breast cancer cells grow from the normal cells of our breast. We shouldn't forget that our body is affected by everything we put into it – either positively or negatively. It's very necessary to avoid smoking and even secondary smoke. It is also essential to maintain a healthy high fiber, low fat diet. You may do well with absolutely zero alcohol as well. If you think that's very difficult to do by yourself, you may find help from professionals and appropriate support groups.

If you have been abusing illegal drugs and/or even prescription medicines, stop now while there's still time. You may seek medical help or undergo rehabilitation as necessary. Make it a point to keep your weight within normal limits. Administer proper precautions when you're going out under the sun to avoid its harmful rays. Take to heart all safety precautions when you're handling dangerous substances and materials. Ensure that you have understood all instructions pertaining to health safety before exposing yourself to anything harmful.

The best way of preventing breast cancer is taking good care of yourself and your body. It can enable you to avoid many diseases as well. Aside from feeling well, you tend to live a longer, more fruitful life by merely loving your body which you are born with.
